An unparalleled summer musical experience

Music meets the natural beauty of British Columbia

Since 2013, Orchestra North has been a place for musicians of all ages and abilities to spend a week learning from world class teaching artists while engaging in workshops, chamber music, and orchestra in Smithers BC. In partnership with the Spirit of the North Classical Music festival the program includes performances in and access to a variety of recitals and concerts in Smithers and other communities each year. Director Roxi Dykstra (pictured right) has produced the Orchestra North Smithers program in various formats, each year cultivating an unforgettable summer experience for all involved. 2023 will mark the first Orchestra North Summer Program based in Prince George!

Introducing the Orchestra North Academy

The Orchestra North Academy welcomes a small number of select musicians to work in both Prince George and Smithers from July 27 to August 4. With a focus on peer-to-peer mentorship, residents will hone and share their craft through participation in regular group masterclasses, workshops, rehearsals, and performances Prince George and in Smithers' Spirit of the North Classical Festival.

Past Program Offerings

Mass Orchestra

Led by Rose Thomson, Music Director and conductor of the Okanagan Symphony, the "Mass Orchestra" rehearses once per day and provides an opportunity for all ages, skill levels, and instruments to come together for a unique playing opportunity of some of the world's greatest masterworks.

Fiddling Class

Roxi Dykstra leads a workshop learning traditional fiddle tunes by ear, a fun and exciting challenge to available to all instruments!

Chamber Music

A hallmark of the Orchestra North Smithers program, chamber music remains at the heart of our programming. Participants are encouraged to form their own chamber ensembles with traditional or non-traditional instrumentation. Our esteemed guest artists serve as coaches.
