The Orchestra North Summer Community Wind Program draws together musicians of all ages and abilities from across Canada for a week of music instruction and performance. Celebrating Northern musicians and composers, Orchestra North promotes the enriching of lives and communities through music and the arts.
The program provides a high-quality music instruction in woodwinds and brass while encouraging, community, collaboration, and musical excellence. Wind participants receive private lessons, and chamber music led by the Orchestra North Summer Program faculty. The program runs between 9am – 3pm daily.
Community members, faculty, and Academy players will come together to play as a wind ensemble. The wind ensemble will perform during the Spirit of the North Classical Music Festival (August 10-12 2017).
All participants will receive invaluable performing experience in a variety of ensembles and advanced players may have the opportunity to perform with the symphony orchestra
If you are not from the Smithers area and do not have family and friends you can stay with, try to secure hotel or camping accommodation. If you are really stuck or if these options are not possible or practical, we can try to find a suitable host for you; in that case, we will put you in touch, and ask that you make the arrangements regarding dates, special requests, and airport transportation with them yourself. The application form has a place to indicate if you need help finding a host.

The Orchestra North Wind Academy is an outstanding two weeks of music making in beautiful Smithers, British Columbia. The Wind Academy is open to advanced high school and university level flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, and horn players who will form the Orchestra North Wind Quintet. The first week will be dedicated to rehearsing as a wind quintet in preparation for a tour of the Northern Region. During the second week, the community program begins and Academy players will play in the Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, and assist faculty teaching community players and coaching chamber ensembles.
The nature of this program lends itself to advanced high school students and university-level wind players who wish to improve their skills, gain performance and teaching experience, and hone their abilities as performers. Likewise, this program provides numerous opportunities for students with an interest in performance and/or education.
The Wind Academy program is FREE for students who are accepted into the program. Billeting with a community member in the Smithers area can also be arranged without charge for Academy participants.
Academy participants must find their own transportation to and from Smithers, however, arrangements can be made to carpool with people come from the same area. Additionally, a small stipend may be provided to Academy players. For more information email:
